After the explosion of August 2020, and thanks to your donations, arcenciel USA was able to fund the tireless relief efforts led by its partner arcenciel Lebanon. This emergency relief work included distribution of food, clothing and medication, as well as reconstruction and rehabilitation of housing.

Since then, the economic situation in Lebanon has continued to worsen. The country has plunged into a deep economic crisis where more than half the population is now living below the poverty limit. More and more families are facing trouble accessing basic needs such as food, health care and education.

The following are critical areas needing immediate attention:
  • Access to basic health care needs (there are severe shortages in the medication supply chain, and critical emergency interventions are no longer covered by insurances)
  • Access to clean drinking water (shortages are due to halts in extraction and difficulties in transportation)
  • Food security for vulnerable families (even the most basic nutritional staples have become out of the affordable range for many families)
  • Fuel for heating (this is especially critical during the winter season)
  • Fuel for transportation (to ensure basic commuting to work) 
  • Technical aids for people with disabilities (the Ministry of Social Affairs has severely decreased its support to vulnerable families)
  • Access to education (vulnerable families can no longer cover school and university fees, and have no access to online education)

The severe economic and health crises that Lebanon is currently facing are directly impacting the education sector. Student drop-out rates, especially in marginalized households, are increasing as the cost of attending school is becoming prohibitive. Covid related school shutdowns and lack of access to computers and the internet are further exacerbating the situation, making school attendance almost impossible for a large number of students.
